McGrew House preps for Souper Taste of Christmas

KINGWOOD — The McGrew Society’s annual Souper Taste of Christmas will be from 11 a.m.-2 p,m. Sunday at the McGrew House in Kingwood.

A buffet of 11 soups, along with a variety of home-baked breads and wassail, will be available for $9 per person.

Favorites from the past, such as Amish barn, Italian wedding, cheesy broccoli, Portuguese vegetable, roasted red pepper, Santa sausage and taco bean soups are on the menu, along with two soups that have been offered every year: Borscht and crab bisque.

A new feature this year will be Senate bean soup, which is served every day at the U.S. Senate cafeteria. Guests may sample four soups, then have a full bowl of their favorite or a different soup altogether.

All the halls, mantles, and doorways of the house have been decked with Christmas decorations, and guests may look around.

The McGrew Gift Shoppe will be open and feature several special gift items, including classic American-made toys such as wooden tops and log sets, railroad whistles.

Also available will be the combination offer of the late Bill Williams’ history of Kingwood and the biography, “James C. McGrew: Statesman and Servant.” The books can be purchased together for $25.
