Mohigans upset top-seed Wheeling Park in Region I volleyball tournament; UHS sweeps MHS, Brooke to win regional title

WELLSBURG, W.Va. — In a shocking twist of fate, the highly-favored No. 1 seed Wheeling Park was upset by Section 2 runner-up Morgantown in the Region I semifinals, sealing the Mohigans’ a spot in the Class AAA state playoff bracket.

Morgantown, who failed to defeat the Patriots in the regular season, took them to five sets to win 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 14-25, 25-20, 15-12).

Alayna Corwin led the charge with 16 kills and two aces, while seniors McKayla Mills (11 kills) and Sage Halbritter (10) added 21 kills.

Morgantown then opened up play against rival University who was coming off a clean sweep of Brooke in the semifinals. Unlike their fight against Wheeling Park, however, the Mohigans were unable to snap the year-long skid against the Hawks, falling in three sets 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22.

Other AAA teams to make the playoffs are Region II champion Musselman and runner-up Hampshire; Region III champion George Washington and runner-up St. Albans; and Region IV champion Spring Valley and runner-up Parkersburg.
