Students honor veterans with music, displays at ceremony

KINGWOOD — Kingwood Elementary School honored local veterans Thursday with music, displays and snacks. Veterans visiting the school were treated to a performance of the official song for each branch of service by the school choir.

“I have a granddaughter singing today,” veteran Charley Graham said. Graham said he served in the Army for 28 years, retiring in 2014.

Veteran Richard Readd said he served in both Desert Storm and Desert Shield as part of the 201st Brigade.

“My wife, Angie, was part of the family support group for that unit,” he said.

On display was a veteran’s wall created by the fourth grade. Five other fourth graders made pictures of themselves being reflected in the wall.

Ernie Trusty, commander of Kingwood VFW Post 826 and a member of Vietnam Veterans Chapter 977 in Reedsville, stood and saluted as the flag was presented. Trusty said the VFW will hold a flag retirement 5 p.m. today at the VFW. Everyone is welcome to attend.
