WVU horses to be part of event

Saddle up for a fun Halloween event with members of the West Virginia University Collegiate Horsemen’s Association.

The student organization will host Halloween with the Horses from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, at the J.W. Ruby Research farm in Reedsville.

The popular event gives families and children the opportunity to visit the farm, meet WVU’s teaching herd, participate in a costume contest and trick-or-treat in a fun and safe atmosphere.

As a bonus, the WVU horses will be dressed in kid-friendly costumes like characters from Avengers, Paw Patrol and Toy Story.

“WVU Collegiate Horsemen’s Association continues to host Halloween with the Horses as its flagship community service event because the students are passionate about offering a family-friendly trick-or-treating experience,” said Crystal Smith, teaching associate professor of animal and nutritional sciences and adviser.

For Kaitlin Ely, a senior agricultural and extension education student and president of the organization, the event is more than costumes and candy. It’s about seeing the families interact with the horses.

“Halloween with the Horses takes quite a bit of planning and plenty of hard work, but the end result is always satisfying,” she said. “It really allows us to showcase our wonderful teaching horses.”

The J.W. Ruby Research Farm is less than five minutes northwest of Reedsville, and 20 minutes southeast of Morgantown. Directions: horses.wvu.edu/farm.

Halloween with the Horses is free.
