Jack Ott

Jack “The Hammer” Ott, 63, of Morgantown, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 17, 2019 at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital with his family at his side. He was born June 18, 1956 in Ft. Benning, Ga., a son of the late Jack and Hallie Marie Hall Ott.

Jack is survived by his two children, Corey Marable of Pt. Marion, Pa. and Shanetha Lewis and husband Robert of Bowie, Md.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his siblings, Pete Ott of Bridgeton, NJ and Melvin Ott and his wife Lynn of Clayton, Ga.; several nieces and nephews, and his long-time companion and love of his life, Mary Ann Watkins of Morgantown. Additionally, Jack is survived by his extended family, Eglociree Smith Walker, Carl Smith, Donald Smith, LaSharon Smith, and Jeanette Smith.

Growing up, Jack was raised by Miss Jessie Smith who preceded him in death, in addition to extended family members Robert Smith, Goffney Smith, and Marcus Smith.

Jack was a fan of college football, shooting pool and taking his boat out and fishing on the river. In his youth and beyond, he was a great basketball player who was known by many as “Red Hot Jack Ott.” No one could tell a joke like Jack could. His jokes often turned into stories that would keep you waiting until the right moment for the perfect punchline.

He was employed at Seneca Glass and at one time, he was the youngest glass blower in the state of West Virginia. Also, he worked for Phil Shuman until he retired. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends, and was the greatest father that his kids could ask for.

Jack will be remembered as someone who was kind to everyone he met and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Jack didn’t want to have a funeral, but instead for his family and friends to have a celebration of his life. All are invited to join together at the Westover VFW Post 9916 at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Professional services are being provided to the family with the guidance of Smith Funeral & Cremation Care of Westover / Morgantown.
