Man arrested after allegedly shooting girlfriend

A Cassville man was arrested after he allegedly told deputies he shot his girlfriend.

Richard G. Shahan Jr., 45, is charged with malicious assault by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded to a Mt. Morris Road home for a reported gunshot victim on Oct. 15, according to a criminal complaint.

When Deputy D. Oziemblowsky arrived on scene, he found a woman with a gunshot wound on her right shoulder, blood on her clothes and blood coming from her nose, the complaint said.

She refused to say what happened.

While searching the home, deputies found a blood trail leading from the front door to the bedroom. A pistol was also found on the bed, the complaint said.

Shahan, the victim’s boyfriend, initially told deputies he was attempting to get the gun from her but changed his story and said he tried to kill her, the complaint said.

Neighbors said Shahan told the victim not to tell police he shot her before police arrived.

Shahan is being held in North Central Regional Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
