Douglas M. VanDevander Sr.

In loving memory from his wife, Birdie, and his children, Doug and Sharon, and daughter-in-law, Stephanie.
Douglas M. VanDevander Sr., of Morgantown, passed away at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the age of 76, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, French and Vella VanDevander; and his brother, Albert Jennings VanDevander.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Birdie of 54 years; his son, Douglas and his wife, Stephanie and their children, Austin, Tyler and Hannah; his daughter, Sharon and her children, Ryan and Joshua Elliff; and his sister, Debbie and her husband, Dan Savage and their daughter, Amanda and her husband, Jason Posey. He is also survived by other nieces and nephews.
Doug was born on Feb. 21, 1943, in Davis, and moved to Morgantown in 1951. He attended Easton Elementary School and he graduated from University High School in 1961. He joined the U.S. Navy in June 1961 and served for four years. He then worked for West Virginia University Agriculture Farm and retired from the University after being there for 33 years.
After retirement, he continued work as an all-around handyman for family and friends. Doug and Birdie were married in Morgantown on June 26, 1965. His favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing and trains. Doug is loved by friends and family and he would always go out of his way to help anyone. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he will be dearly missed.
Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, 10 S. High St., Morgantown, from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12. Honoring Doug’s wishes, cremation will follow.
