The crash — past Buckeye Road and just before Statler’s Country Mart — was reported to 911 at 12:16 p.m., according to a MECCA 911 supervisor.
Monongalia County Sheriff’s Deputy S. McRobie said one person was killed but their identity was not available Thursday. No one was taken to the hospital. The crash involved four vehicles and remains under investigation, he said.
The names of the survivors, vehicle types and other information was not available in time for this report.
Two of the vehicles involved were a dump truck carrying asphalt and a silver Hyundai — both of which were towed away.
The fatality occurred when the asphalt truck rolled on top of a vehicle, West Virginia Division of Highways Safety Officer Mike Daley said. It was not clear which vehicle the fatality was in.
An 80-ton crane truck was brought in by Summer’s Towing to lift the dump truck off its side.
Both lanes of Mason-Dixon Highway were closed until 4:42 p.m. and while many people turned around, not everyone could.
Dave Long stopped because of the accident about 1 p.m. and said he wasn’t able to turn around because of his trailer. Long was hauling a tractor a friend of his bought. He would have needed to back about three quarters of a mile to be able to turn around, he said.
Long was also worried about getting to work on time. The Southwestern Energy employee said he was scheduled to work at 7 p.m. in Wetzel County.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, Cassville Volunteer Fire Department, Star City Volunteer Fire Department, Mon EMS, West Virginia State Police, Mount Morris Volunteer Fire Department and Granville Police Department responded.
