Notre Dame College’s Koenig named Fairmont State men’s basketball head coach

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State University announced Friday that Notre Dame College (Ohio) men’s basketball head coach Tim Koenig will fill the head spot after Joe Mazzulla’s departure earlier this month. He is the Fighting Falcon’s 13th head coach.

Koenig, named the 2019 Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year, spent six years with Notre Dame’s program. Notre Dame is coming off of a historic 2018-19 season, ending with a 20-8 overall record – the program’s first 20-win regular season – and earning the No. 3 seed in the MEC tournament. Notre Dame charged their way through the tournament, winning the conference title and winning a bid into the NCAA Tournament. It was the first time the Division II school played in the NCAA Tournament.

“I am thrilled to welcome Tim Koenig to Fairmont State University as our head men’s basketball coach,” said FSU Directer of Athletics Chad Fowler. “Tim has great energy and his love and passion for the game of basketball is exactly what we were looking for in our next head coach.”

“Our men’s basketball program has had tremendous success under Jerrod Calhoun and Joe Mazzulla the past seven seasons and we look forward to that success continuing this season and in the future under Tim Koenig’s leadership,” he said.

Koenig is known to lead standout players, including two All-Americans – Will Vorhees (2019) and Tyree Gaiter (2016) – as well as a total of 11 All-MEC and five All-Region picks.

“I would like to thank President Mirta Martin, Vice President Tim McNeely, Director of Athletics Chad Fowler, members of the board of governors and all supporters of the men’s basketball program for believing in me and giving me this opportunity,” Koenig said. “It’s always a tough decision to move your family from where you grew up, but when this job was offered to me, my family and I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Notre Dame is the birthplace of Koenig’s collegiate coaching career, starting out as a graduate assistant in 2006 before moving to assistant coach in 2009. He was named head coach in 2013 after an assistant coaching gig at Lake Erie College in 2012.

A press conference to introduce Koenig is set for a later date inside Joe Retton Arena. The day and time will be announced soon.
