Star City honors ‘past, present and future veterans’ with ceremony Monday

STAR CITY — Memorial Day is coming up Monday. A three-day weekend for many, the holiday is an opportunity to enjoy time relaxing with friends or catching up on chores.
Star City plans to mark the occasion by honoring the veterans for which the holiday was created.
At 10:30 a.m. Monday at Edith B. Barill Riverfront Park, the town will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony. Anyone is welcome.
Star City Mayor Herman Reid said the event is a way to “honor our past, present and future veterans.”
Reid said taking the time to thank veterans has made the holiday an important fixture in the community.
“Not sure [of] the number of years, but we’ve been doing it for a while. Around 10 years,” Reid said.
Reid also said they work hard to make the event accessible for all ages, giving everyone a chance to recognize the importance of the day.
“It’s a family-friendly, free event to honor our veterans,” Reid said.
The event will begin with an introduction from Reid and local veteran Bob Musick.
Following the introduction, attendees can expect a variety of presentations and performances, including an invocation from Pastor Kevin Cain and an introduction of local veterans.
The event is planned to end at noon with a special closing ceremony.
Refreshments will be served, alongside a 21-gun salute and a performance of “Taps.”
A former member of the United States Air Force, Reid said Star City’s Memorial Day event is one of the many ways the city honors those who served.
“We also hold a Veteran’s Day celebration,” Reid said.
The Star City Council looks forward to the event every year, and council members are in the final stages of planning.
“We’ve got new plants, new flags, and will be washing all of the monuments,” said Public Works Director Phillip Davis.
While the event is open to all, local veterans are encouraged to attend, where they will have front-row seats to the day’s presentations.
“We ask local veterans to contact Star City Hall for more information,” said Council Member Emma Luzander.
