Police investigate school threat, find none

MORGANTOWN — A story about a disturbance between two students at South Middle School got blown out of proportion on Thursday prompting a police investigation that found no credible threat.

Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston said his department was alerted about a possible threat of violence at South Middle on Friday.

The MPD, Pennsylvania State Police and Westover Police identified the reported source of the threat and conducted interviews.

The investigation showed no credible threat of violence at any Monongalia County School, Preston said. A disturbance between two children happened during school hours and was dealt with by school officials and the school’s resource officer.

In the retelling of the incident that evening, the story was embellished on social media and the story was shared between both students and adults before being reported to law enforcement.

Additional officers were assigned to South Middle School and other Morgantown schools despite the lack of credible threats, Preston said.
