Just over 500 get to the polls as Morgantown’s early voting period winds down

MORGANTOWN — Saturday, April 27 is the last day to vote early ahead of Tuesday’s Morgantown City Council election.
Polls will be open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Morgantown City Hall, on Spruce Street, and the Northside Fire Station, at 1000 Van Voorhis Road.
According to the city clerk’s office, 82 ballots were cast on Friday, bringing the nine-day total to 505 — far off the pace from the 2017 election, during which 1,188 voters took advantage of early voting.
All told, 2,724 ballots —  about 15 percent of the city’s registered voters — participated in 2017 despite contested races in all seven wards.
This time around, there are contested races in the 1st, 2nd and 6th wards.
1st — Incumbent Rachel Fetty versus Ron Bane
2nd — Incumbent Bill Kawecki versus Barbara Parsons
6th — Jay Redmond versus Dave Harshbarger
In the 7th Ward, incumbent Barry Wendell faces a write-in challenge from Todd Stainbrook.
The 3rd Ward presents a unique scenario in which the only name that will appear on the ballot — incumbent Ryan Wallace — is moving to Canada and will not serve another term.
Voters have three write-in options in Richard Dumas, Zack Cruze and Wes Nugent.
If Wallace is elected, he will have to resign the seat, which the remaining six members of council would fill by appointment.
The polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. –  7:30 p.m. on Election Day.
Polling places are based on a resident’s precinct, not by ward. You can see your precinct on your voter registration card.
Election information, including  how to vote for a write-in candidate, and the location of the city’s nine polling locations is available on the city’s website, morgantownwv.gov.
