Morgantown’s riverfront revitalization project moving forward

MORGANTOWN — Work continues on Morgantown’s $4.1 million riverfront overhaul.
According to the city’s communications office, March Westin is in the process of demolishing interior spaces in the former home of Mountain Line’s bus depot, on Garrett Street.
The contractor — named the city’s “construction manager at risk” on the project in March 2018 for $209,7000 — is also performing site grading around the Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park amphitheater.
The work is being financed through a grant from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Foundation.
The project remains within budget and on schedule for completion early next year, according to the city.
Morgantown City Manager Paul  Brake has said the city will likely hire  someone this fall to program the facility, fulfilling a requirement of the grant funding.
Renovations to the riverfront park include expansion of the amphitheater stage and seating area, with an addition of canopies above the seats.
The work will also provide upgrades to security features, including the creation of  a police sub-station near the park.
Improvements to the historic train depot and restroom facility and an overhaul of the Walnut Street Landing — including a new parking area, landscaping and a new kayak storage and launch area — will also be part of the project.
