University baseball team falls to Buckhannon-Upshur in season opener

MORGANTOWN — The University High baseball team tried to rally in the seventh inning, but ultimately fell to Buckhannon-Upshur, 7-6, in the season opener.

The Hawks had a 3-1 lead after three innings, but Buckhannon-Upshur scored at least one run in each of the next five innings to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth and was able to hang on for the win. BU’s Logan Whitehair brought home the go-ahead run.

UHS’s rally came up short when Evan Smith’s line drive was caught by BU’s Timothy Phillips with runners in scoring position.

“I have faith in Timmy,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires. “You are up three (runs) going into the inning, they crawl back and you are on edge anyways on a lined shot like that. That’s a game-winner if it falls.”

Casey Hamner picked up the win in relief for Buckhannon-Upshur, allowing three runs over the final four innings.
