Richard Gregg

Richard “Dick” Gregg, 83, of Star City, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019, J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.  He was born in Star City, on July 28, 1935, the son of the late Samuel and Dorothy Helen (Good) Gregg.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and proceeded to Davis & Lynch Glass working a total of 42 years.  Dick also known as “Coach” coached youth sports three different decades and was instrumental starting girl’s grade school basketball in 1978.  He enjoyed coaching the Star City Eagles.

Dick was a standout football player for MHS from 1953-1954 being the only player in the state to be named 1st team All State both as Offensive Guard and Defensive Tackle the same year.  He was throughout his life a number one  Mountaineer fan.

He is  survived by his loving wife, Joan, of 60 years; daughter, Robin Gregg; son, Todd Gregg; sisters, Arlene Neely and husband, Gary and Connie Nagy and husband, Charles.

In addition to his parents,  Dick was preceded in death by siblings, Kay Christopher, George Gregg, Hazel Fox, John Gregg, Sadie Noone, Rose Nicklin, Sammy Gregg, Clara Huggins, Dorothy Jean Dezzutti and Patty Goodnight; and his beloved dog, Sammy.

A special thanks to Dr. Ma and staff at the Mary Babb Randolph Center, WVU Vascular & Heart Institute, Dr. Mills, Dr. Darbandi, Dr. Mattess, the 2018 MHS football team and lifetime friends, Jean and John Olivito.

Friends and family will be received at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 3334B University Avenue, Star City, from 4 – 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 17.  The evening visitation will conclude with a Scriptual Wake Service at 6:30 p.m.  Visitation will continue from 10 a.m.  on Monday, March 18, until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Father John V. DiBacco, Jr., as Celebrant.  Entombment will follow at the St. Mary Peace Garden Mausoleum with full military funeral rites conducted.
