Attempted traffic stop ends with three ruined cars

MORGANTOWN — A man known to area law enforcement started a police chase on Mileground Road Monday morning and, after deputies aborted the chase, allegedly crashed his vehicle into two parked cars along Cheat Road.
Monongalia County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Al Kisner wouldn’t identify the man Monday.
Kisner said a deputy attempted to stop a Kia Sorento on the Mileground for a violation, but the driver would not stop.
The deputy started to chase the vehicle, but by the time he was on Easton Hill, a supervisor halted the chase, Kisner said.

About 11:40 a.m., an accident was reported on Cheat Road in the parking lot shared by WVU Medicine at Cheat Lake and the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
“It was surreal to watch it happen,” Craig Campbell, a WVU Medicine employee, said.
The Sorento fishtailed as was it was coming up the hill and rolled through a grassy area separating the road from the parking lot, Campbell said.
He said he watched the Sorento land on top of a Mitsubishi Eclipse and Toyota Tacoma as he was waiting to turn out of the parking lot.
Campbell turned around to see if he could help. He said the driver climbed out the window and sprinted through the WVU Medicine parking lot and down the hill behind the building.
Kisner said the suspect is known, and as of early Monday afternoon had not been caught.
There is a residential area behind WVU Medicine at Cheat Lake.
Campbell said it was amazing the driver wasn’t hurt, adding he ignored Campbell’s shouts asking if he needed help. He did answer “No” when Campbell asked if anyone else was in the vehicle.
Star City Volunteer Fire Department and Mon Health EMS also responded.
