MORGANTOWN — To help bring awareness to women’s heart health, Mon Health System staff wore red Feb. 1 in honor of the American Heart Association’s Wear Red Day.
The organization aims to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease in women.
“In West Virginia, the rate of heart disease among women is double that of the national average,” said Dr. Samantha Crites, a cardiologist with the Mon Health Heart & Vascular Center. “It’s important to raise awareness for heart disease in women because sometimes it’s overlooked as just a risk for men.”
According to a Mon Health press release, free blood pressure screenings were offered at Mon Health facilities throughout the day. It’s all part of encouraging women to think about heart disease prevention, Crites said.
“It’s critical to care about heart disease,” she said. “More women die of heart disease than any other disease, which is largely preventable.”
