Logan Routt suspended for first half of Texas game

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — West Virginia forward Logan Routt will be suspended for the first half of Saturday’s game against Texas, the result of the junior tripping Texas Tech guard Matt Mooney during Monday’s loss against the Red Raiders.

West Virginia  Director of Athletics Shane Lyons announced the suspension Wednesday in a press release. The school said the Big 12 Conference accepted the self-imposed suspension regarding the incident.

The play in question came with 16:57 remaining in the second half of what was an 81-50 win by Texas Tech. Mooney closed out on a 3-point attempt and his momentum carried him into the Mountaineers’ bench, where Routt closed his legs together in what appeared to be an attempt to trip Mooney, as he ran back onto the floor. Routt, from Cameron, was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and was ejected from the game. He did not play in the game prior to the incident.

Routt has started 10 games this season. He is averaging 2.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

West Virginia (10-13, 2-8 Big 12) hosts Texas (12-10, 4-5), at 8 p.m. Saturday.
