Costs of Raleigh County mine rescue being evaluated

CHARLESTON —The costs associated with the rescue of three people at a Raleigh County mine are being determined, Gov. Jim Justice’s general counsel said Thursday.

Emergency crews rescued Erica Treadway, 31, of Pax, Kayla Williams, 25, of Artie, and Cody Beverly, 21, of Dorothy, from the Rock House Powellton mine near Clear Creek on Wednesday. The three individuals, as well as Eddie Williams, 43, of Artie, entered the mine on Saturday; Eddie Williams exited the mine Monday.

“This event just took place and we will evaluate and determine what costs were associated with this mine rescue effort and once that has been determined that information will be made available to the public,” said Brian Abraham, general counsel to the governor.

Officials with the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training, West Virginia National Guard and local and state agencies assisted with the rescue.
