Preston commission candidates neck-and-neck in election spending

KINGWOOD — The candidates for Preston County Commissioner are neck and neck in their election spending, according to the most recent campaign finance reports.
Democrat John Crippin and Republican Samantha Stone are vying for Commissioner Craig Jennings’ seat. Jennings chose not to seek re-election.
The last campaign finance report, covering the period from Sept. 24 through Oct. 21, was due by Oct. 26 at the county clerk’s office.
Crippin reported spending $2,996.49 for the period. Other than two contributions of $100 each, it was his own money. The money went to buy advertisements.
He listed total expenses for his campaign through the last report as $5,790.57. Almost none of that was spent in the primary, when he was unopposed for the nomination for his party.
Stone reported similar total expenses for the campaign, $5,679.26. But she faced a tough primary, against five other Republicans, and spent nearly $5,000 in that race.
In this last filing period, she reported spending $543.21 of her own money on ads and supplies. So far all the money she has reported spending has been her own.
The post-general election campaign finance report is due by Nov. 18. Candidates are required by law to file the reports.
