Morgantown police identify man who died during psychiatric emergency

Morgantown police have identified the man who died during a psychiatric emergency Tuesday morning as Aaron Thomas Riel.

The 38-year-old was from the Morgantown area, according to a press release from MPD.

The cause of the incident is unknown and investigators are waiting on toxicology screens and the medical examiner’s report, Andrew Stacy, Morgantown’s public information officer, said.

Riel died after falling more than 50 feet while trying to jump from one tree to another during the incident on Prairie Avenue at about 5:30 a.m.

Police were called to the scene because Riel was screaming and climbing trees in the area. Emergency workers attempted to talk Riel down but were unsuccessful. He was declared dead on the scene.
