WVU roundup: Sear, WVU men’s golf team win Bridgeport invitational

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Max Sear and the West Virginia men’s golf team emerged victorious at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, claiming the medalist honors and the team title, respectively Tuesday at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport.

Marking the first Mountaineer medalist in more than 30 years, Sear finished with a three-round score of 210 for six-under-par. After carding 69 and 72 in the first two rounds, he used four birdies, including three on the back nine, to record a 69 in the third round. He finished one stroke ahead of Matt Naumec of Boston College, who shot five under for a 211.

West Virginia shot 866 to finish two over as a team. This marks the first team title of the 2018-’19 season, and the first time the Mountaineers have won their home event.

“Max was our first high school recruit, so it was good to see him win. He’s been close a lot and had some great summers. It was good to see him finish on top,” head coach Sean Covich said. “We set up the course really hard and felt like it would better prepare us for Big 12 action. It’s good to see the team dominate on a course that played this difficult. Hopefully, they proved to themselves they can play long, challenging courses because that’s what we’ll see the rest of the year.”

Davidson College finished as the team runner-up with a score of 877 for 13-over-par, while Eastern Kentucky University was third at 25 over with an 889.

Men’s soccer
Wright State 3, WVU 0

DAYTON, Ohio — The West Virginia men’s soccer team’s three-match win streak was snapped with a 3-0 loss at No. 17 Wright State.

The Mountaineers (8-5-0) were shut out for the fourth time this season and the first time since September. The Raiders (9-1-2) struck early and took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute after a goal from Stefan Rokvic — who would score later in the game as well.

The offense didn’t stop there in the first half either. Wright State made it 2-0 after Linden Eberle found the back of the net in the 38th minute.

The Raiders took 3-0 lead in the 86th minute after another goal from Rokvic to offically ice the game and put the Mountaineers away.

Wright State outshot WVU 14-12 and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Mountaineers did have a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks and goalkeeper Steven Tekesky had five saves.

“We didn’t compete, we looked like a tired team that has traveled, and we didn’t compete tonight,” WVU head coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “They jumped on us 10 minutes into the game, and at the end of the day, they just out-worked us. Give them credit, because they out-worked us, but we were soft, and we got what we deserved on the night.”

Wright State goalkeeper Joel Sundell tallied four saves in the win.

Volleyball
WVU 3, George Washington 0

WASHINGTON, D.C. — West Virginia’s volleyball ended a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep over George Washington.

With the win, WVU earned its fifth sweep of the season to move to 9-9 on the year (1-4 Big 12).

“It was a good win,” head coach Reed Sunahara said. “I saw some good things tonight. It was another opportunity to get better, but we still have a lot to work on. We just have to continue to compete and get better at our craft.”

A trio of Mountaineers hit above .300 on the evening, with junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans hitting .308 to finish with a team-high nine kills. Junior right side hitter Natania Levak was good for seven, hitting .636, while sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo and freshman outside hitter Kristin Lux each added six. DeMeo also hit .600 in the match.

For George Washington, Heather Merryman dished out 24 assists while adding three digs. Marianna Warren led the Colonials with 10 kills and also had three digs, a block and an assist.
