Senate challengers from area raise more funds than incumbents

MORGANTOWN — In the first four months of the general election period, challengers for the three local state Senate seats out-fundraised and mostly outspent the incumbents.

The candidates are seeking to represent the 2nd, 13th and 14th districts. Figures come from their First General finance reports, covering the period of May 21 through Sept. 23.

2nd District
Incumbent Republican Charles Clements faces Democrat challenger Denny Longwell.

Clements opened the period with $11,448.51 and raised another $11,920 in contributions, along with $9,100 at a Charleston fundraiser and $340.70 in-kind.

He spent $6,638.57 this period, leaving an account balance of $25,829.94 to enter the next period.

His totals for the season are $33,012.19 raised and $6,841.55 spent.

Longwell opened with $12,761.20 and raised $15,790. He spent $3,848.73, leaving a balance of $24,702.47.

His totals so far are $38,730 raised and $8,307.53 spent.

13th District
Incumbent Democrat Bob Beach faces Republican Mike Oliverio, who is seeking to return to the Senate after stepping down in 2010 to run for federal office.

Beach opened with $17,951.62. He raised $18,941 in contributions, $6,121 at three Morgantown fundraisers and $1,055.05 in-kind.

Beach spent $12,823.73, leaving a balance of $30,189.89. His totals for the season are $46,617.05 raised and $13,247.11spent.

Oliverio entered the period with $18,560.61. He raised $8,400 in contributions and $31,725 at Morgantown and Charleston fundraisers.

He spent $26,456.22, leaving a balance of $32,229.39. His totals are $66,035 raised and $33,745.61 spent.

14th District
Incumbent Republican Dave Sypolt faces Democrat challenger Stephanie Zucker.

Sypolt opened with $2,001.55 and raised $1,950. He spent $1,489.90, leaving a balance of $2,461.65.

His totals for the season so far are $7,450 raised and $6,675.30 spent.

Zucker opened with $8,127.08. She raised $14,391 in contributions and $6,719 at fundraisers in Philippi, Kingwood, Grafton and Bruceton Mills, along with $961.54 in-kind.

She spent $8,725.12, leaving a balance of $20,511.96. Her totals so far are $37,243.54 raised and $14,960.04 spent.
