Reedsville residents bring ATV issues to council

REEDSVILLE — Two residents came to Reedsville Council with issues regarding ATVs, and a councilwoman complained about how residents keep their property, at the most recent council meeting.
Randy Trickett and Bob McDonald asked council Monday to consider not all people with four-wheelers speed or misuse them.
“We enjoy riding,” Trickett said. “Sometimes I use my four-wheeler to go to my mother’s to plow snow.”
Councilwoman Britney Titus said council has discussed leniency for those who use their four-wheelers for practical purposes. She added they can’t be ridden on city streets.
“You have to be licensed to drive a side by side and 16 to drive a four-wheeler,” Councilman Scott Williams said.
“I can understand why you don’t want anyone running crazy in town,” McDonald said. “I know people go flying around at night. I agree with you that licensing and age should be enforced.”
Councilwoman Renee Stone said she hasn’t seen the town officer out at night. “I have never seen him after 4,” she said. Both Titus and Williams said the officer works evenings. “I’ve seen him out,” Titus said.Stone also said she believes old, rotting shingles left in garbage bags on property beside the park should be cleaned up.
Titus said a letter could also be sent to the person who has the old shingles next to the park.
Stone also noted that a resident’s driveway from the road to the garage door has dog boxes and a grill on it. “You can’t get to the garage,” she said.
“They are on his property,” Williams said.
“When we move in we make a social contract with our neighbors to do nothing that will bring down the neighborhood,” Stone said.
“You’re talking about normal people,” Recorder Sandy Kisner said. “Not every one is normal.”
“Then all of these abnormal people should live together,” Stone replied.
“If we try to enforce this they can take us to court. We have to pay for everything. Then they can take us to magistrate court and we will lose,” Titus said.
Williams said the town junk ordinance mentions vehicles and appliances. “There’s nothing about a barbecue grill,” he said. “You mean you can’t have a grill outside your house? I know the person; I’ll have a talk with him.”
Councilman Jim Wagner reported the portable radio and microphone to be used by the town officer will be available this week. Funds were transferred from the general funds savings account to the general funds checking account to pay for the item. The radio was ordered from DC Electronics at a cost of $3,000.
Council also ordered a shoulder radio and an emergency button from the same company. The radio didn’t come with these items, which had to be ordered separate at a cost of $65.
Council is continuing to take applications for a maintenance laborer/sewer operator. It has received six applications so far. Anyone considering applying for the position should either be Class C certified or willing to take the classes. Applications can be picked up at Reedsville Town Hall.
In other business, council voted to hold trick or treat from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
The next meeting of Reedsville Town Council will be 6:30 p.m. Oct. 22, at 6:30 p.m. Council will also hold an executive session at the end of the meeting.
