Does West Virginia linebacker David Long deserve half-interception credit? He thinks so

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — David Long wasn’t supposed to blitz, but went at the Kansas quarterback upon noticing Carter Stanley faking the play-action.

That made for a narrow window, and Long jumped to tip Carter’s pass, resulting in an interception by defensive end Ezekiel Rose late in the first quarter of West Virginia’s 38-22 win.

So, should Long be credited with a half-interception?

“I hope they do,” Long said. “Throughout the week we had seen that the quarterback throws low. So I just got my hands up, patted the ball down and Zeke made a good play on the ball.”

The West Virginia linebacker had 10 tackles against the Jayhawks and was credited with a pass breakup.

He has been consistent all season, getting double digit tackles in all but one game, his high being 15 against Texas Tech. And he has two sacks, but no interceptions.

Crunching numbers from Saturday’s game

46 — Number of yards rushing for Kansas tailback Khalil Herbert after rushing for 291 against the Mountaineers last season.

107 — Freshman running back Leddie Brown’s rushing yards, the second time he has surpassed 100 yards in a game.
