WVU to face Monmouth in first round of Myrtle Beach basketball tournament

MORGANTOWN — ESPN revealed the bracket for the inaugural Myrtle Beach Invitational on Wednesday, and the WVU men’s basketball team will face Monmouth in the first round, at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15.

The three-day tournament runs Nov. 15, 16, 18, at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C.

The Terriers finished 11-20 last season, but have won the regular season Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title in two of the past three seasons.

WVU will play either Valparaiso or Western Kentucky in the second game.

The top half of the bracket will feature St. Joseph’s vs. Wake Forest and UCF vs. Cal State Fullerton. Wake Forest is expected to have a bounce back year behind its strong recruiting class, ranked 17th overall in the ESPN rankings; while St. Joseph’s has earned a postseason bid in four of the past seven seasons. Cal State Fullerton is appearing in its second consecutive ESPN  early-season tournament.

Cal State Fullerton will face a UCF team expected to be one of the top teams in the American Athletic Conference.

The bracket-format tournament will feature 12 games over three days. The teams compete once per day, regardless of results. The two remaining undefeated teams will face off in the championship game, at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18. That game will be televised by ESPN2.
