Newburg Council discusses unpaid water and sewer bills

NEWBURG — Newburg Council is looking into collecting unpaid water and sewer bills at rental properties.
Council voted Tuesday to ask town attorney Sheila Williams to research whether landlords can be contacted if their tenants’ water bills are not paid. According to town ordinances, anyone living within the town limits must pay at least the minimum sewer and garbage bills.
In other business council reminded residents that town ordinances do not allows keeping chickens and other livestock within the town limits.
Council members reported there were no updates on the Independence water line addition. At an earlier, meeting Morgan Coast of Vaughn, Coast & Vaughn Inc. said a design for the project could start as early May.

Council set a tentative date of 9 a.m.-noon May 19 for its annual cleanup day. There will be a $15 charge to have one pickup truck load of garbage hauled away. Cleanup day is open to all Newburg garbage customers. Only one pickup truck load is allowed for each household.

Council members also voted to give raises to two town employees. The next scheduled meeting of the Newburg Water Board and Council is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 8.
