Kingwood man who said he heard ‘voices’ is set to plea

KINGWOOD — A  Kingwood man pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful assault this week for stabbing another man as the victim took a shower.

Preston Circuit Judge Lawrance Miller Jr. had ordered a competency hearing during a February hearing for  Kenneth Ray Brown Jr., after Brown said  he was taking medication because he heard voices. Brown said he was hearing voices when he stabbed Devin Sean Sullivan on June 2, 2017.

Following the incident, Brown was  charged with attempted murder. Under a plea agreement the charge was dropped to felony unlawful assault. Brown waived his indictment by a grand jury.

Police said Brown, 54, entered Sullivan’s home and punched and stabbed Sullivan, who was in the shower. According to police, witnesses said the two men both had a romantic interest in a 17-year-old female.

Judge Miller said psychologist Edward Baker found Brown competent after administering tests, reviewing records and interviewing Brown.  Miller told Brown at the plea hearing Tuesday the sentence for unlawful assault is one to five years in prison or 12 months in jail or a $500 fine.

“My client is anxious to take the plea because it’s a better offer than what he could be charged with,” Brown’s attorney, Kristen Antolini, said.
