Couple pleads not guilty to neglect resulting in baby’s death

MORGANTOWN — A couple accused of child neglect resulting in a baby’s death pleaded not guilty on Jan. 18.

Edward Lee and Julie Porreca pleaded not guilty to child neglect resulting in death, child abuse resulting in injury and two counts of conspiracy. They entered their pleas before Monongalia County Circuit Court Judge Susan Tucker.

Police said that in September 2016, state troopers went to a Fort Martin Road residence for a report of a 7-month-old in cardiac arrest. The baby was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The baby had injuries consistent with abuse and was never provided necessary medical attention. Tests showed the baby had pneumonia. Porreca and Lee told state troopers Porreca gave the infant medication when she noticed a fever, but only an antidepressant was found in his system.

Porreca was previously indicted on charges related to the case. But, the most recent indictment will replace that case. Both of their trials were set for February.
