Severe flu virus hits W.Va.

MORGANTOWN — The flu season is especially severe this year, and the virus caused the first pediatric death in West Virginia in years, said Dr. Lee Smith, county health officer and executive director of the Monongalia County Health Department (MCHD).

“The death speaks to the severity of the illness,” he said.

The best way to fight the flu is to get vaccinated, Smith said.

Everyone above 6 months old should get the flu vaccine, including the elderly and people with conditions that compromise their immune systems, according to a MCHD press release.
