Winds Down Trees

A storm system knocked power out to about 26,000 Mon Power customers early Monday morning.

Mon Power has staff meteorologists who warned the company of the incoming storm and the damage it was expected to cause, said Spokesperson Mark Durbin.

“So, we were prepped and ready for it,” he said.

A strong cold front brought the storm and with it winds from 45-50 mph, though those measurements weren’t taken by AccuWeather’s instruments at the Morgantown Municipal Airport because they went down about 3 a.m. — about the time the storm hit, Paul Walker, AccuWeather senior meteorologist said.

Crews have been systematically restoring power to customers, starting with the largest outages first, Durbin said.

As of noon Monday, about 5,300 customers in Monongalia County and 10 in Preston County were still without power.

If customers have or see downed wires they should call 888-LIGHTSS (544-4877) and Mon Power will make it a priority, Durbin said.

Walker said the temperature is expected to drop over the next few days. Today’s high will be in the upper 40s.
