PHS girls’ soccer team ties Parkersburg South, 1-1

KINGWOOD — Mary Katherine Garbart scored at the 60-minute mark as the Preston (10-6-4) girls’ soccer team salvaged a 1-1 tie against Parkersburg South, on Oct. 14.

Parkersburg South got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute, on a long-range cross from the right side to an unmarked attacker just inside the penalty area, near the far post.

Play continued back and forth for the remainder of the first half and into the second half with neither team having much of an edge.

Preston capitalized on some timely possession play. Garbart advanced the ball around the right side of the field, beating a Parkersburg South defender and launching a long shot from 30 yards out, netting the equalizer. Megan Noss recorded the assist.

The teams pressed hard for the final 20 minutes but could not score. Preston goalkeeper Rylee Colebank made three saves.

PHS begins sectional play at 6 p.m. Oct. 17, at Morgantown High.
