MORGANTOWN — The public can comment and ask questions about Next Generation Standards, also known as Common Core, at a meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Ruby Grand Hall of the Erickson Alumni Center.

The center’s Ruby Grand Hall will host the first regional meeting of the Academic Spotlight project, a statewide evaluation of West Virginia’s academic standards, which focus on mathematics and English language arts.

The Academic Spotlight was formed this summer in response to calls in the state Legislature to repeal the Next Generation Standards. The standards were implemented gradually from 2011-’14. This past year was the first time the standards were fully implemented across all grade levels.
