WVU roundup: Moisey, wrestlers pin loss on Pitt

MORGANTOWN — Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey earned his third pin of the season at 125 pounds, as the WVU wrestling team topped No. 25 Pitt, 24-10, in the Backyard Brawl on Dec. 9, at the WVU Coliseum.

In defeating the Panthers (1-3), the Mountaineers (1-2) also earned two major decisions, at 149 and 174.

“Anytime you beat Pitt, it’s a good day,” coach Sammie Henson said. “We wanted to perform well. We knew that they had a tough team. We have a tough team. We concentrated on a lot of individual work with these guys this week. We followed the game plan, and it worked.”

Moisey started things off for the Mountaineers, taking on Brendan Price. In the first period, Moisey scored a pair of takedowns and earned two back points to take a 6-1 lead into the second. Moisey added two more takedowns before pinning Price, with 21 seconds left in the match, to give the Mountaineers a 6-0 advantage.

Pitt evened the score at 6-6 with back-to-back wins, at 133 and 141 pounds. Redshirt freshman Kyler Rea put WVU ahead with his victory at 149 pounds, a 15-3 major decision of Pitt’s Alesandro Murray.

Later, redshirt senior Parker VonEgidy earned four points for the Mountaineers with a 10-2 major decision of Pitt’s Austin Bell, at 174 pounds.

The Mountaineers were deducted two team points for unsportsmanlike conduct and loss of mat control.

WVU next travels to Blacksburg, Va., for a match against Virginia Tech, on Dec. 22.
