Siri hits grand slam as Bears beat Doubledays

AUBURN, N.Y. (AP) — Raul Siri hit a grand slam in the third inning, leading the West Virginia Black Bears to an 8-6 win over the Auburn Doubledays on Sept. 1.

Joel Cesar got Nick Choruby to hit into a double play with a runner on first to end the game for his sixth save of the season.

The grand slam by Siri gave the Black Bears an 8-1 lead and capped a seven-run inning for West Virginia. Earlier in the inning, West Virginia took the lead when Brett Pope scored on an error, then added to it when Jared Oliva scored on an error and Dylan Busby hit an RBI double.

The Doubledays cut into the deficit with four runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run single by Andres Martinez.

The Doubledays saw their comeback attempt come up short after Chance Shepard hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to cut the West Virginia lead to 8-6.

West Virginia starter Gavin Wallace (3-2) picked up the win despite allowing five runs and eight hits over six innings. Opposing starter Angel Guillen (0-2) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game after a rough outing in which he allowed eight runs and five hits over three innings.
