MORGANTOWN — Monongalia County Schools denied negligence in a lawsuit over racial harassment of a student.

Recently, the district answered a lawsuit filed by an unnamed teen and her mother, Melissa Hawkins, against the district and the Mon County Sheriff’s Department.

They allege the teen suffered ongoing race-based discrimination, harassment and bullying at University High School. At one point, she was also the victim of a knife attack during her freshman year.

The suit alleges several counts such as racial discrimination, negligence and infliction of emotional distress. It asks for an unspecified amount of damages.

In a separate response, Mon Schools argued its employees acted reasonably given the circumstances and did not cause any damage to the teen.

The district also denied negligence and any damages were done by others.
