MORGANTOWN — A refund check from the West Virginia Division of Highways (DOH) and movement on a new extension office in Mylan Park highlighted the Feb. 14 regular meeting of the Monongalia County Commission.

Commission President Tom Bloom announced the county recently received a check for $288,000.27 from the DOH tied to the replacement of the Hartman Run Bridge, which was completed in 2015.

In order to get the bridge replaced and moved from county ownership over to the state, a deal was orchestrated by a previous iteration of the commission — Bloom, Eldon Callen and Bill Bartolo — through which the county provided funds to be added to federal dollars secured by the DOH.

Following the project, Bloom said the county received a check for $500, which prompted a closer look at the numbers.

“With the support of my colleagues, I worked with [County Administrator] Rennetta McClure, who deserves a lot credit, and we started to investigate this,” Bloom said. “We found the contract and sent the information to [DOH District 4 Engineer] Don Williams ... who helped cut through the red tape.”

In other county news, the commission approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Mylan Park Foundation with the goal of providing a new WVU Monongalia County Extension Services office in Mylan Park.

“Mylan Park Foundation, from our discussions, acting in good faith, had started that process with the architect. They would be the ones hiring the architect and building the building,” Commissioner Sean Sikora said. “What this MOU does is formalize that relationship so they can recoup those costs and we can move forward.”

Commissioner Ed Hawkins explained that while WVU employs extension agents, their efforts directly benefit the county. He went on to say that initial discussions for the facility not only include space for extension services, but potentially local offices for the West Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and additional rental space.

The extension office currently rents Suite 106 of Westover’s WesMon Plaza, off Commerce Drive.
