MORGANTOWN — University High, ranked No. 2 in the state but owner of a win last week over No. 1 Parkersburg South, drew the top seed for next week’s Class AAA Region I, Section 2 basketball tourney.

The Hawks will play host to Preston at 7 p.m. Feb. 28.

Morgantown plays host to Buckhannon-Upshur at the same time.

The winners will play March 2, at the higher-seeded team’s gym, with both teams moving on to regional play against the two Section 1 survivors from among Wheeling Park, John Marshall and Brooke.

North Marion 53, Preston 50: KINGWOOD — The Knights (3-17) overcame a cold second quarter (14-5) to lead, 48-47 lead, in the last minute, but the Huskies rallied to pull it out.

“We had a turnover and they come back and knock a 3 down,” PHS coach Paul Koontz explained. “We had a tough second quarter, only scored five points, that’s the story of the game. We outscored them in the second half and first quarter, but that second quarter killed us.”

Andrew Lantz led the Knights with 21 points and Cory Pyles added 12.

Preston plays at University at 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

Buckhannon-Upshur 73, Preston 44: TENNERTON — Hanna McClung scored 23 points to lead the Bucs — 22-1 and ranked No. 1 in Class AAA past the Knights (11-12) in the first round of the Region I Section 2 playoffs, ending Preston’s season.

“It doesn’t end the way you want it to, but there was a lot of good that was done,” PHS coach Brian Miller said. “We’ll miss the seniors. But only one team’s gonna end the year on a win.”

Kirsten Brown, Makenzie Friend and Taylor Mayne played their last games for the Knights. Brown tallied 14 points and Friend 13.

Buckhannon-Upshur moves on to play Morgantown for the section title.

“They’re really fast,” Miller said of the Bucs. “Their speed, you know, it’s hard to mimic” in practice.
