Prep roundup: MHS, UHS girls paired in section semis

MORGANTOWN — It will be winner moves on, loser goes home Feb. 20 when city rivals Morgantown and University meet in the Region 1 Section 2 girls’ basketball tourney.

In seedings released Tuesday, the Mohigans drew the No. 2 spot and will host the No. 3 Hawks at 7 p.m.

Top-seeded Buckhannon-Upshur plays host to No. 4 Preston at 7 p.m. the same day.

The winners square off at 7 p.m. Thursday, at the home of the higher-seeded team. But both will move on to play the survivors from the Section 1 tournament among Wheeling Park (top seed), Brooke (No. 2) and John Marshall (No. 3), at the regional.

In the Class A girls’ sectional, Notre Dame earned the top seed and a first-round bye. No. 2 Trinity plays host to South Harrison and No. 3 Clay-Battelle plays host to Tygarts Valley, both at 7 p.m. Saturday. Also, Gilmer County hosts Doddridge County.

If Trinity and Clay-Battelle both win, they will play each other for a berth in the section final, on Tuesday, at Trinity.


Clay-Battelle 68, Linsly 64: BLACKSVILLE — Gunner Brummage scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half and pulled down 11 rebounds, and the Cee-Bees (10-9) rallied from 19 points behind to win.

Seth Casino added 16 points, including a half-court buzzer-beater to end the third quarter, and Mojo Chisler added 12.

C-B trailed by 15 with about five minutes to go in the third, but a urge capped by Casino’s shot left his team down just 48-46.

“Great team victory,” coach Josh Kisner said, and added praise for Chase Ammons, who didn’t score but played “great defense all night long.”

The Cee-Bees next play Thursday, at Paden City.


University 45, Huntington 38: HUNTINGTON —Zoe Murphy netted 18 points and Ashten Boggs 16, and the Hawks (9-12) stormed from behind in the fourth quarter to top the Highlanders. University plays its last game of the regular season Friday, hosting Southern Garrett (Oakland, Md.).

Clay-Battelle 45, Notre Dame 30: BLACKSVILLE — The Cee-Bees (13-7) surged to a 10-2 lead after a quarter and increased it to 27-14 by the half in cruising past the Irish.

Abbey Ammons tallied 20 points and Autumn Stewart chipped in 13 for C-B, which plays host to Tygarts Valley tonight.


Morgantown 76, Weir 22: Ben Rosiello netted 14 points and Seth Goins 12 for the Mohigans (16-0).


Huntington 32, University 26: Isabella Bowers led the Hawks (7-11) with six points.


Mountaineer 7s 52, Suncrest 16: Ashlyn Weaver led the Mounties (14-2) with 16 points in a semifinal game of the Monongalia County tournament. Mountaineer will play South or Westwood for the championship Thursday.
