CHARLESTON — The Senate passed SJR 12, a proposed constitutional amendment concerning public funding of abortions, 25-9, on Feb. 9.

The one-sentence measure that would be put before the voters if the House also passes it says: “Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of abortion.”

While there is disagreement over its effects, Judiciary chair Charles Trump, R-Morgan, said it would apply only to elective abortions, and situations concerning the mother's life, rape and incest would still be covered under current code.

It now goes to the House.
