INSTITUTE — Class A No. 7-ranked Trinity Christian proved to be the first challenge No. 3 Valley (Fayette) could not handle this year.

Senior Jo Zini and junior Daniel Woods combined for 31 points to lead the Warriors (12-4) past the Greyhounds (13-1), 43-42, Feb. 7, at the Little General Shootout, at West Virginia State University.

“Jo and Daniel, they dominated the paint today,” Trinity head coach John Fowkes said. Valley “didn’t really have an answer for that.”

Shots weren’t coming easy for the Warriors, though, and Fowkes credits his squad’s strong defensive performance for securing the victory while the offense struggled.

“If it wasn’t for the defense we played, we would have been in trouble,” Fowkes said. “All around, I’d say it was our best defensive effort of the year.”

Trinity will return to action Friday, at home, hosting No. 5 Notre Dame for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
