MORGANTOWN — One man made 102 warm and fuzzy donations to Mon Health Medical Center.

Raymond VanSickle, 82, of Friendsville, Md., crocheted 102 hats which will be given to newborn babies and help raise awareness for those born with congenital heart defects.

“You’re an amazing, amazing human being,” Ryan Jerico, division director for the American Heart Association (AHA), told VanSickle on Feb. 6.

Congenital heart defects can take a variety of forms, including holes in the heart or missing ventricles that require multiple surgeries before the child’s first birthday, Jerico said.

“The awareness raised by the hats is important,” he said. “A lot of parents are not sure what’s happening when their child is born with a heart defect.”

February is American Heart Month and Jerico said he would love to work with VanSickle going into next year.
