FAIRMONT — Sydni Clawges scored 10 points and pulled down 18 rebounds to lead Morgantown High’s girls’ basketball team to victory in its season opener Dec. 1.

The Mohigans defeated Wheeling Central, 38-34, at the Frank Hines Memorial Shootout.

MHS shot out to a 16-5 lead after a quarter and upped the lead to 27-13 at the half.

But Wheeling Central managed to make it a close game by the end.

“We didn’t handle pressure very well down the stretch,” MHS coach Jason White said. “But give our kids a lot of credit, they hung in there and scrapped out a way to win. It wasn’t pretty.”

Kaitlyn Ammons contributed eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and Aliyssa Neal had six assists. Morgantown has a quick turnaround for its next game, playing Bluefield at 3 p.m. Dec. 2.
