Preston boys Big 10 XC champs

FAIRMONT — Preston High’s boys’ cross-country team won the Big 10 Conference championship Oct. 12 for the first time since 2004.

The Knights easily outdistanced second-place East Fairmont, 50-83, in the 11-team field at White Day Golf Course.

PHS’s Ward Ries finished first (16:44.91) and was the Harrier of the Year (16:44). Cole Friend also earned first-team all-conference honors with a third-place finish (16:49).

Preston had four other runners in the top 20 — Hayden Thomas (14th, 18:09), Wyatt Wolfe (15th, 18:10), Evan Thomas (17th, 18:16) and Trey Smith-Tatham (18th, 18:17) — out of 135 runners.

The girls’ team finished third out of 12 teams, behind Bridgeport and Philip Barbour.

Earning first-team all-conference honors was Alexa Gorondy (11th, 21:32). Jenna Lenhart (12th, 21:54) and Tori Carr (18th, 22:21) also finished in the top 20, out of 101 runners.

Jon Griffith, of Bridgeport, was the girls’ Coach of the Year, and Paul Martin, of Preston, was the boys’ Coach of the Year.
