Black Bears beaten, 6-5, at State College

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Scott Hurst hit a run-scoring triple in a six-run first inning, leading the State College Spikes to a 6-5 win over the West Virginia Black Bears on Aug. 24.

Jason Zgardowski got Tristan Gray to fly out with a runner on first to end the game for his first save of the season.

The triple by Hurst started the scoring in the inning and gave the Spikes a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, State College scored on four more plays, including a two-run double by Matt Davis.

West Virginia scored a run in the second, on a single by Raul Siri, then cut into the deficit further in the third inning, when Bligh Madris hit an RBI double and scored on a ground out by Gray.

Siri scored on a ground out in the fourth inning and Gray scored on a double play in the eighth to cut the State College lead to 6-5.

Steven Farinaro (2-1) got the win in relief while West Virginia starter Sergio Cubilete (3-6) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game.

For the Black Bears, Chris Sharpe tripled and singled. Lucas Tancas doubled and singled.
