KINGWOOD — A Reedsville man is charged with hitting a West Virginia State Police trooper during his arrest.

James Robert Johnston Jr., 28, was charged with battery on a police officer, obstruction and destruction of property. He was in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on Nov. 27 in lieu of $7,500 bond.

According to the criminal complaint by State Police Cpl. D.W. Simmons: On Nov. 25, he responded to a verbal dispute in Masontown involving Johnston. Monongalia County had issued a warrant for Johnston for petit larceny.

When Simmons began to arrest Johnston, Johnston hit the trooper in the face and was pepper sprayed. Before being taken into custody, he damaged the corporal’s uniform and shooting medal. Simmons’ knee was also injured.
