MHS girls squeak past Bulldogs, 40-39

MARTINSBURG — Alexiyah Hughes made a critical steal in the final seconds on Jan. 6 to preserve the Morgantown High girls’ basketball team’s 40-39 victory, at Martinsburg.

The Bulldogs were holding for a potential game-winning shot when Hughes — who finished with six points — came up with the turnover and was fouled.

“She played a great defensive game for us,” Morgantown coach Jason White said. “I’m proud of the way she stepped up coming off the bench. She played really hard.”

The Mohigans (8-2) were short-handed at times because of injury but persevered to earn the win.

“We had kids step up and fill in in a big way,” White said.

Amelia Jenkins paced Martinsburg with 13 points.

Sydni Clawges led Morgantown with 16 points. Jaimalyn Ash scored eight for the Mohigans, who play again Jan. 8, at top-ranked Buckhannon-Upshur.
