KINGWOOD — The Preston County Farmland Protection Board has added two more farms to protected status.

LaDeana Teets updated Preston County commissioners June 19.

The addition of the White Farm and the Hoffman farm bring the total number of farms under protection to five, with a total of 667 acres.

Farmland protection allows landowners to apply to voluntarily designate all or a portion of their property for agricultural or woodlands forever. They maintain ownership but receive a fee for the easement from the county Farmland Protection Board.

The board receives local support from a fee on property transfers and grants. Preston created the local group in 2004.
