New owner, same moving service
OJ White becomes part of Central Van & Storage

Gene Papa is happy to add Morgantown to the list of places his company serves. With the recent acquisition of OJ White Moving and Storage on Grafton Road, Papa, the owner of Central Van and Storage, said serving the local community will be easier.

In mid-January, Papa purchased OJ White from previous owner, Rob Smyth, and the company became part of the Central family, which has locations in Charleston, Beckley, Clarksburg, Parkersburg and Pittsburgh.

“We’re still basically getting our ways in place, our set-up as far as administration,” Papa said.

For the time being, the Morgantown moving and storage company will still be known as OJ White — which Papa said has great name recognition in the area — but eventually the trucks will be painted orange and the name will change to Central.

“As far as services, we still do the same local household moving, long-distance moving, international, office and commercial moving, and then probably one of the other lines we’ll get into that [OJ White] didn’t do is delivering distribution of store fixtures, furniture and that,” Papa said.

“We do have a lot more capability size-wise, so I think the people in the Morgantown area will have more choices of dates to move and availability of crews.”

Papa has been in the moving business since 1993, and has owned his own company since 1997. Central Van and Storage, an interstate agent for Allied Van Lines, is no stranger to the Morgantown area — WVU sometimes uses the company for moving and relocation, including away game transportation for the football team — but having a hub of operations in Morgantown will help increase visibility, Papa said.

“You really need to be part of the community in the area to really be a good company to service the area. Now that gives us the opportunity to service everyone in this area,” he said.

Central retained eight of the workers from OJ White, and expects to hire more so that by May, Papa wants to have 15-16 employees at the Morgantown location. Six moving vans, one large tractor-trailer and three service vehicles will work out of the OJ White building. But because of Central’s multiple-city structure, trucks can move around between them and Central can offer more competitive pricing.

“We’re the only moving company in West Virginia with multiple locations. All of our competitors have one location, so it does give us an advantage when there are the transfers from Morgantown to Charleston or vice versa or Huntington to Morgantown,” Papa said.

He’s also aware that obtaining OJ White will give him a head start on building customers in the area.

“We knew we were getting great value for this,” Papa said, adding that he and Smyth were cordial in the past, which helped the purchase to go through smoothly.

“It’s a Morgantown institution,” Papa said. “If all you had to say was ‘Who’s OJ White?’ everybody knew it was the mover.”
