FCX Systems is putting Morgantown on the map by designing, engineering and building solid-state frequency converters, ground power support and more for clients across the globe.
A frequency converter changes the alternating current of one frequency to another, and FCX Systems mainly appeals to aircrafts by engineering efficient frequency converter units of the appropriate size and weight. Along with aviation, the company has been creating units for military, industry, commercial and shore power since 1987.
“We literally have a unit in every continent across the world and that’s something not everybody can say,” President and CEO of FCX Systems Craig Walker said.
In May, FCX Systems won the President’s “E” Star Award for Exports for making a signification contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports.
Allen Wright and Matt Howell, two of the company’s five original founders, were humbled to receive the award from their company based in Morgantown, W.Va.
Howell, senior vice president of manufacturing and project engineering, points out that FCX Systems is the first company in West Virginia to win the honor.
“It’s very humbling to get a presidential award for the work that you’ve done that has basically expanded us around the world,” Wright, senior vice president of R&D and engineering, said.
Wright views the company’s location as an asset and contributor to their international footprint.
“The employees that we have have extra pride in their work, in their craftsmanship. They add something a little special to units that I don’t think our competitors can compete with,” Wright said, noting that his heart and roots lie with West Virginia.
Along with its location, FCX Systems has a couple unique qualities that give it an edge over competitors.
“There are a lot of application unique situations out there in the world where that cookie cutter unit doesn’t cut it,” Howell said. “We like to design new things. We like to take on the challenge.”
Along with being a bold engineer-driven company, FCX Systems demonstrates reliable service by having employees personally answer the phone throughout day and night to cater to international client time differences.
“We’ve tried to lean on those types of aspects that are difference makers for us to grow our business from that standpoint,” Walker said.
Walker tends to keep his eye out for units from FCX Systems when he boards planes.
“Originally, I went on a plane and sat down and started reading,” he said. “Now I’m craning my neck underneath to see if it has our unit or not. There’s that little extra pride when you see FCX under the bridge.”
